International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a global federation of national standards bodies, founded in 1947 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Its mission is to develop and promote voluntary international standards that support the quality, safety, efficiency and compatibility of products, services and systems across virtually every sector.

Why ISO standards matter

ISO standards support technical and commercial cooperation between countries and help drive innovation, competitiveness and consumer protection. By providing a common reference for products and processes, they help to:

  • ensure the interoperability of products and services;
  • reduce technical barriers to trade;
  • improve the quality and safety of industrial and consumer goods.

Main families of ISO standards

  • ISO 9000: quality management systems.
  • ISO 14000: environmental management systems, including ISO 14001 and the GHG standards ISO 14064 and ISO 14067.
  • ISO 45001: occupational health and safety management systems.
  • ISO 26000: guidance on social responsibility.
  • ISO 50001: energy management.

How ISO standards are developed

Standards are produced by technical committees made up of experts from industry, government, academia and civil society. The process usually involves:

  1. proposing a new standard;
  2. discussing and drafting a working version;
  3. voting and approval by member bodies;
  4. publishing the final standard.

Certification versus compliance

  • Certification: granted by an accredited body that verifies whether an organisation meets all the requirements of a given standard.
  • Voluntary compliance: organisations can adopt ISO standards without seeking formal certification.

Benefits for organisations

  • Efficiency: standardised processes reduce errors and operating costs.
  • Reputation: certification signals a commitment to quality and sustainability.
  • Market access: standards facilitate exports and international partnerships.

Criticisms and challenges

  • Cost of certification: can be significant, especially for SMEs.
  • Proliferation: some organisations point to a large number of overlapping standards.
  • Keeping pace with innovation: rapid technological change requires frequent revisions.

ISO standards are essential tools for promoting quality, safety and sustainability on a global scale. While certification requires investment and commitment, the gains in reputation, competitiveness and market access make ISO an important reference for any organisation.
