Ecodesign is the approach that builds environmental criteria into the design stage of a product or packaging, aiming to reduce its impact across the whole life cycle. The underlying idea is that most of a product's environmental impacts are determined at the moment it is designed: the materials chosen, how it is made, how long it lasts and what happens at the end of its life.
This guide explains what ecodesign is, what its principles are, how the European Union regulates it through the ESPR Regulation and, for packaging, the PPWR Regulation, and offers concrete examples in product and packaging.
Ecodesign is not about a product that merely looks "greener", but about a product designed to use fewer resources, last longer and re-enter the production cycle when it is no longer used. It rests on life-cycle thinking: instead of looking at a single stage, it considers everything from raw-material extraction to end of life. To quantify that impact it uses life cycle assessment (LCA), which lets you compare design alternatives with data rather than intuition. Without that whole-system view it is easy to fall for false solutions: packaging that weighs less but can no longer be recycled, or a "natural" material that uses far more water or energy to produce, can worsen the environmental balance instead of improving it.

These principles connect directly with the circular economy: a well ecodesigned product is easier to reuse, repair and recycle, closing the material loop.
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, replaces the old Ecodesign Directive and greatly expands its scope: it moves from focusing on energy-related products to covering, in principle, almost any physical product. The ESPR can set requirements on durability, repairability, recycled content, efficiency and recyclability product by product through delegated acts.
On 16 April 2025 the European Commission adopted the first ecodesign and energy labelling working plan (2025-2030), which prioritises, among others, groups such as textiles and apparel, furniture (including mattresses), tyres, iron and steel and aluminium. The concrete requirements will arrive through delegated acts staggered by product group across the plan's period, so it is worth following the Commission's timetable for each category.
One of the ESPR's major novelties is the Digital Product Passport (DPP): a digital record with information on the product's composition, origin, repairability and end of life, accessible along the value chain. It will be rolled out by category as the delegated acts are adopted; the battery passport is the first to arrive, from 2027.
For packaging, the reference framework is Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR), which entered into force in February 2025 and has applied generally since 12 August 2026. The PPWR sets rules on design for recycling, recycled content, reuse, empty-space reduction and restricted substances. Some specific obligations, such as recycled-content and reuse targets, apply from 2030. Ecodesign applied to packaging is therefore a legal requirement and not just good practice.
The table below summarises the main milestones of both frameworks. The ESPR delegated-act dates depend on their final adoption by category.

Ecodesign is a tool; the circular economy is the model. Ecodesign designs products and packaging so they fit into a circular system in which materials are kept in use for as long as possible.
The ESPR can apply, in principle, to almost any physical product. The specific requirements are set by category through delegated acts; the first working plan prioritises, among others, textiles, furniture, tyres, iron and steel and aluminium.
The PPWR has applied generally since 12 August 2026, although some specific obligations, such as recycled-content and reuse targets, apply from 2030.
It is not essential to start, but life cycle assessment is the best tool for making data-based design decisions and avoiding shifting impacts from one stage to another.
