Normative alternatives for carbon footprint measurement

The main alternatives to Normative for carbon footprint measurement are Manglai, Greenly, Plan A, Cozero, Persefoni, Sweep and Greemko. Normative is a Swedish carbon accounting platform aimed at mid sized and large European companies. Looking elsewhere makes sense if you need Spain's MITECO registry, native Spanish support or a lighter deployment.

What is Normative and who does it work well for?

Normative was founded in Stockholm in 2014 and has offices in Stockholm, Copenhagen and London. Its platform calculates scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions against a library the company puts at more than 349,000 emission factors, and its calculation methodology is independently verified by TÜV SÜD against the GHG Protocol. Normative reports more than 350 customers.

The product is organised around carbon accounting, product carbon footprint, supply chain engagement, SBTi target setting, CSRD compliance and CBAM reporting. Every account is assigned a named climate strategy advisor, which explains much of the positioning: this is software plus expert support, not software alone.

Normative works well when your priority is a traceable calculation with human guidance, when you plan to submit targets to the SBTi, or when your operations sit mainly in northern Europe. If your problem is something else, for example registering your footprint with Spain's MITECO, covering waste and water alongside carbon, or going live in weeks without a consulting project, other tools fit better.

Normative alternatives compared

One note on that frameworks column: several vendors still list the TCFD and the SASB Standards as if they were free standing frameworks. The TCFD task force was disbanded in 2023 and its recommendations are now embedded in IFRS S2, just as the SASB Standards are maintained by the ISSB within the IFRS Foundation. Covering IFRS S2 means covering the TCFD recommendations by design.

Manglai

Manglai is a Spanish environmental management platform built around artificial intelligence. It covers five modules: corporate carbon footprint under the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064, water footprint under ISO 14046, waste management, product footprint, and logistics emissions under the GLEC Framework and ISO 14083. It is designed around the Spanish regulatory environment, including registration in the MITECO carbon footprint registry and the Calculo, Reduzco and Compenso seals.

It fits when you operate in Spain or Latin America, when you need evidence and support in Spanish, when you run several sites, or when your environmental obligations reach beyond carbon. The company publishes that it has clients in 70 countries, more than 30,000 platform users and 25 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent under management, with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5. Plans are Starter, Pro and Enterprise, priced by number of facilities and sector on a 12 month subscription.

Greenly

Greenly is a French carbon intelligence platform that reports more than 3,500 clients, from small businesses to large accounts. It is arguably the closest alternative to Normative in shape: corporate footprint measurement, life cycle assessment, supplier engagement, decarbonisation strategy and an ESG management module, all backed by a consultant network.

It states coverage of SBTi, CSRD, TCFD, IFRS and ISSB, CDP accreditation, ISO 27001 and ISO 14067, SASB, CARB, EUDR, CBAM and the Digital Product Passport. It includes an AI assistant called EcoPilot. Pricing is not published. Greenly is a good alternative if you value breadth of framework coverage plus access to external consultants, and your footprint is European with a French or English speaking centre of gravity.

Plan A

Plan A is a German carbon accounting and decarbonisation platform aimed at mid sized and large companies. Its most verifiable differentiator is its certification stack: GHG Protocol compliance certified by TÜV Rheinland, B Corp certification and SOC 2 Type II for information security.

It covers CSRD and ESRS, CSDDD, the EU taxonomy, the UK SDR regime, US SEC climate disclosures and SBTi alignment. The product splits into three blocks: carbon accounting, carbon reporting and decarbonisation. Pricing is not published. Plan A is a solid Normative alternative when European regulatory reporting backed by external certification is the priority and your operations weigh towards Germany or central Europe.

Cozero

Cozero is a Berlin platform founded in 2020 and aimed at emissions intensive sectors: manufacturing, logistics and technology. It addresses finance leaders as explicitly as sustainability teams, and its pitch centres on the financial return of decarbonisation.

The product has three modules: Log for scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions accounting, Act for reduction planning with return modelling, and Share for regulatory disclosure. It states coverage of the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, CSRD, SBTi, CDP and the GLEC Framework for logistics. Pricing is not published. Cozero makes sense against Normative if you are an industrial or logistics business that wants to prioritise measures by cost, not simply measure.

Persefoni

Persefoni is a US carbon accounting platform with an unusually strong internal control story. It reports more than 9,000 teams using the product and a certification list that is rare in this market: ISO 27001, ISO 27017, CSA STAR Level 2, SOC 1 Type II and SOC 2 Type II, plus SOCOTEC certification for PCAF Standard compliance and TÜV Rheinland validation.

It covers the GHG Protocol, CSRD, TCFD, PCAF, SASB and the Californian climate laws SB 253 and SB 261, with dedicated financed emissions modules. It is the only tool on this list with a genuine free tier: Persefoni Pro is free with no trial period or time limit, and the Advanced plan is priced on request. A good alternative when you report to investors or auditors and need finance grade traceability. Less relevant if Spanish regulation is your driver.

Sweep

Sweep is a sustainability data platform aimed at large organisations, the midmarket, financial institutions and asset managers. Its strength is structuring ESG data across the value chain and between subsidiaries, rather than calculating a single footprint.

It states coverage of CSRD, the GHG Protocol, CDP, ISSB, PCAF, GRI, SASB, California SB 253 and the UK SRS regime. It names plans as Enterprise, Midmarket, financial institutions and Sweep Starter, but publishes no figures. Sweep is worth considering when your problem is not measurement but consolidating and governing sustainability data across many entities at once.

Greemko

Greemko is a Spanish platform based in Madrid, focused on digitising environmental management end to end: carbon footprint, reduction and decarbonisation planning, and reporting. It works with companies across more than twelve sectors, from agriculture and construction to transport and finance, and states service in more than 25 countries.

It calculates scope 1, 2 and 3 including the 15 scope 3 categories. It offers customisable Starter, Pro and SMART plans with no published figures. Worth evaluating if you want a local Spanish supplier with a Spanish language interface and a broader environmental management scope than carbon alone.

What should a Normative alternative cover if you operate in Spain?

The Spanish framework adds requirements that international platforms do not always handle out of the box. Four are worth checking before you sign:

• Royal Decree 214/2025. Royal Decree 214/2025 of 18 March 2025 requires companies within its scope to calculate their scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint and to prepare and publish an emissions reduction plan. • MITECO seals. If you plan to apply for the Calculo, Reduzco or Compenso seals, the tool has to produce the calculation and documentation in the format the ministry accepts, not a generic report.
• Language and evidence. A verifier or a Spanish public sector client will ask for traceability in Spanish. Check that the evidence export is translated, not just the interface.

How do you choose between these alternatives?

Five criteria order the decision better than any feature list:

1. What the law requires of you, and from when. After Directive (EU) 2026/470, the Omnibus I directive, published in the Official Journal on 26 February 2026, CSRD only reaches companies with more than 1,000 employees and more than 450 million euros in net turnover, with first reports covering financial years starting on or after 1 January 2027. Below that threshold your reference is the voluntary VSME standard, adopted by the European Commission on 3 July 2026 as a delegated act. Buying a platform sized for full CSRD when your case is VSME is the most expensive mistake in this market.
2. What you measure besides carbon. If you also carry waste, water or product footprint obligations, a carbon only platform leaves you running parallel spreadsheets.
3. How the data gets in. Ask about ERP integration, invoice parsing and API access. That is what separates a deployment measured in weeks from a project measured in months.
4. Who does the work. Normative and Greenly bundle expert support. If your internal team is one person at half capacity, that matters more than an extra module.

When does staying with Normative make sense?

Switching platforms costs time and breaks your historical data series. Stay with Normative if your calculation is already externally validated and you do not want to reopen the methodology, if you are submitting targets to the SBTi and value the track record of support on those submissions, if your operations are mainly Nordic or British, or if the advisor assigned to your account is doing work your team cannot absorb internally. The better alternative is not the one with more features, it is the one that solves your actual obligation with the team you actually have.

Can Normative be used to register with the Spanish MITECO carbon footprint registry?

Normative does not document the MITECO registry among the frameworks it covers on its website. If registration and obtaining the Calculo, Reduzco or Compenso seals is your goal, confirm with the vendor that the calculation output matches what the ministry asks for, or pick a tool that treats it as a native use case.

Which alternative is best for a European SME?

It depends on your starting point. If you need to comply with Royal Decree 214/2025 and work in Spanish, local options fit better. If your obligation comes from pressure by a large customer reporting under CSRD, what you need is alignment with the VSME standard, which sets the maximum information that company can request from its value chain.

Can I migrate emissions history from one platform to another?

Generally yes, by exporting activity data and recalculating with the new tool's emission factors. What does not migrate automatically is the methodological reasoning: organisational boundaries, base year and treatment of estimates.
