With the arrival of the new millennium, the UN developed a plan to combat global poverty. Fifteen years later, this plan was expanded to include new goals focused on environmental sustainability, giving rise to what we now know as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In this article, we delve into the 2030 Agenda: its objectives, the goals it pursues, and a detailed understanding of this important framework for sustainable development and how we can contribute to achieving it.

What is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?

The 2030 Agenda is an ambitious action plan developed by the UN that sets out 169 specific targets to be achieved over 15 years. These targets are grouped into 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is a universal agenda, applicable to all countries and populations, aimed at promoting prosperity and well-being for all while protecting the planet.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as Global Goals, were adopted in 2015 by the United Nations to ensure humanity enjoys peace and prosperity. These goals aim to promote sustainability across three fundamental dimensions: environmental, economic, and social.

1. No poverty

This goal seeks to eradicate poverty in all its forms worldwide. Poverty is not limited to the lack of income but also includes deprivation of basic capabilities and access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and housing. Extreme poverty weakens social cohesion, generates instability, and perpetuates inequality. To eradicate it, comprehensive strategies that address its root causes and promote inclusive economic development are essential.

2. Zero hunger

This goal aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. Malnutrition has devastating consequences for health, development, and well-being, particularly for children. To achieve this goal, it is crucial to transform food systems, making them more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive.

3. Good health and well-being

This goal focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all. This includes access to quality healthcare services, disease prevention and treatment, and mental health and wellness promotion. Health is a fundamental human right and a critical factor in sustainable development. Achieving this goal requires a comprehensive approach addressing social determinants of health and equitable access to quality healthcare.

4. Quality education

The goal of quality education seeks to ensure inclusive, equitable, and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Education is a key driver of individual and social development, empowering people, promoting equal opportunities, and contributing to the creation of more just and prosperous societies.

5. Gender equality

This goal aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Gender discrimination limits the potential of women and girls, preventing their full participation in society and economic development. Achieving gender equality requires removing legal, social, and cultural barriers that perpetuate discrimination.

6. Clean water and sanitation

This goal focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Water scarcity and inadequate sanitation affect millions of people worldwide, leading to diseases, poverty, and inequality. Investments in infrastructure, sustainable water management, and hygiene promotion are essential to guarantee universal access to water and sanitation.

7. Affordable and clean energy

This goal aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. Access to clean and affordable energy is essential to reducing poverty, improving health, and protecting the environment. Achieving this goal requires investments in renewable energy, improved energy efficiency, and promoting universal energy access.

8. Decent work and economic growth

This goal seeks to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. Sustainable economic growth and decent work are vital for reducing poverty, improving quality of life, and promoting social inclusion. Policies supporting job creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship are necessary to achieve this goal.

9. Industry, innovation, and infrastructure

This goal focuses on building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation. Resilient infrastructure, sustainable industrialization, and innovation are essential for boosting productivity, creating jobs, and advancing technological development. Investments in infrastructure, innovation policies, and clean technologies are needed to achieve this goal.

10. Reduced inequalities

This goal aims to reduce inequality within and among countries. Inequality limits opportunities, perpetuates poverty, and fuels conflict. Reducing inequality requires policies promoting social inclusion, equal opportunities, and wealth redistribution.

11. Sustainable cities and communities

This goal focuses on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Sustainable cities are essential for improving quality of life, reducing pollution, promoting energy efficiency, and fostering social inclusion. Integrated urban planning, public transport investment, affordable housing, and green spaces are vital to achieving this goal.

12. Responsible consumption and production

This goal aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. These are crucial for reducing pollution, conserving natural resources, and promoting the circular economy. Changes in consumption patterns, energy efficiency, and sustainable production practices are required to achieve this goal.

13. Climate action

This goal focuses on taking urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts. Climate change has devastating consequences for the environment, economy, and society. Addressing it requires significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation to climate change impacts, and investment in renewable energy.

At Manglai, our software solutions, based on the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064, help companies measure, manage, and reduce their carbon footprint, contributing to the fight against climate change.

14. Life below water

This goal seeks to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. Overfishing, pollution, and climate change threaten ocean health. Sustainable fisheries management, marine pollution reduction, and marine protected areas are necessary for preserving life below water.

15. Life on land

This goal focuses on protecting, restoring, and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, managing forests sustainably, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation, and stopping biodiversity loss.

16. Peace, justice, and strong institutions

This goal seeks to promote peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions.

17. Partnerships for the goals

This goal focuses on strengthening partnerships to achieve the SDGs. Global challenges require global solutions, with governments, businesses, civil society, and international organizations working together.
