Registering your carbon footprint with MITECO brings concrete advantages: it scores points in public tenders, strengthens your reputation with clients and investors, and structures your decarbonisation strategy with the backing of an official seal. This article explains what the registry is, what benefits it offers and how to register your footprint step by step.

What is the MITECO carbon-footprint registry?

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) is the body responsible for Spain's national climate-change policy. Since 2014 it has run the Registry of carbon footprint, offsetting and CO₂ absorption projects, where organisations demonstrate that they calculate, reduce and offset their emissions.

Registration is, as a general rule, voluntary for private companies. This is worth being clear about following the entry into force of Royal Decree 214/2025: it requires large companies to calculate and publish their footprint and to have a reduction plan, but it does not require them to enrol in the registry. Only the central public sector must register its footprint annually from 2026. Even so, registering voluntarily is the best way to make that effort visible and obtain the official seal.

Benefits of registering your carbon footprint with MITECO

The advantages of measuring and registering your footprint go well beyond compliance:

An edge in public tenders and procurement

Many public procurement specifications value having a carbon footprint registered with MITECO. Each seal (Calculo, Reduzco and Compenso) can add points in the environmental section, improving your chances of being awarded a contract over competitors that lack it.

Reputation and client acquisition

The MITECO seal is a visible signal of environmental commitment that helps retain clients and suppliers engaged with sustainability and attract those who prioritise responsible providers.

Getting ahead of regulation and reducing risk

Calculating and registering your footprint helps you anticipate future regulatory requirements and manage emissions-related risks. It also strengthens your credibility with banks, investors and grant programmes that value environmental management.

Cost savings

By measuring their footprint, many organisations uncover previously unnoticed energy inefficiencies, which makes it possible to identify savings measures with a direct impact on the bill.

The Calculo, Reduzco and Compenso seals

The registry recognises the level of participation through three annual seals:

  • Calculo (I calculate): the organisation registers its footprint, at least in Scope 1 and 2, and submits a reduction plan.
  • Reduzco (I reduce): it demonstrates a downward trend in its emissions ratio by comparing two consecutive three-year periods (at least four years of data are needed).
  • Compenso (I offset): the organisation offsets part or all of its emissions through absorptions from projects registered in the registry and located in Spain.

You can see the detail of each seal in our guide to obtaining the Calculo, Reduzco and Compenso seals.

How to register your company's carbon footprint

The registration process follows three main steps:

  1. Calculate emissions: build the inventory of direct emissions (Scope 1) and indirect emissions (Scope 2 and, where applicable, Scope 3) using a recognised methodology such as ISO 14064 or the GHG Protocol.
  2. Verification: where required (for example, if you are not an SME or you register Scope 3), an accredited body verifies the inventory.
  3. Registration: submit the application, the calculation report and, if applicable, the reduction plan on the MITECO carbon-footprint registry platform.

Once the registration is approved, the organisation obtains the corresponding seal and can communicate it in line with the registry's brand manual.
