ISO 14064 vs GHG Protocol: which one should you choose to measure your emissions?

A practical guide to knowing which standard applies to you, when each one matters and how not to get lost in the decision.

ISO 14064 vs GHG Protocol: which one should you choose to measure your emissions?

When someone tells you that you have to measure your carbon footprint "according to the GHG Protocol" or "with ISO 14064", the first thing you do is look for which one is correct. As if it were a choice between two rival methodologies and you had to settle on one.

The problem is that they do not work that way.

They are different tools, designed for different objectives. And choosing the wrong one does not mean your calculation is wrong, but rather that it may not serve what you are being asked for.

Can you imagine spending weeks rigorously calculating your carbon footprint, only to discover when the client's tender arrives that they were asking for ISO certification? Or the other way around: spending months on a certification process for a requirement that did not need it?

It is not a calculation error. It is having started without knowing exactly what would be needed in the end. We have prepared this document precisely to avoid that, so you do not waste time, resources or clients.

This guide is for you if:

  • You have been asked for emissions data and you do not know whether what you have "counts" or not
  • You are preparing your first inventory and you are not sure which standard to start with
  • Someone at the company has mentioned ISO 14064 and you do not know whether it is mandatory or optional
  • You need to register with MITECO or comply with the CSRD and you do not know which methodology applies
  • You already have your emissions figure, but people ask whether it is "certified" and you do not know what to answer

What you will find in this guide:

  • What ISO 14064 and the GHG Protocol are
  • In which cases each one applies
  • Concrete cases: CSRD, corporate clients and more
  • Where to start based on your exact situation

If you want to dig deeper before downloading the guide, you can read our comparison between the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1 or the definition of the ISO 14064 standard.

Whatever your case, Manglai makes it easy

If what you need is to measure your footprint following the GHG Protocol to respond to a client, prepare your CSRD report or register with MITECO, Manglai calculates your Scopes 1, 2 and 3 with up-to-date emission factors and generates reports ready to share or submit.

And if you also need to be certified under ISO 14064, you do not have to redo anything. The inventory is already built with the traceability and documentation that an external verifier will ask you for. You only have to take the next step.

And if you are still not sure which of the two you need, we are here for that too.
