Clean Industry Certification (PROFEPA)

The Clean Industry Certification (Certificación Industria Limpia) is a voluntary programme run by Mexico's Federal Environmental Protection Agency (PROFEPA). It is aimed at companies that want to improve their environmental performance in an integrated way. Obtaining this distinction means not only meeting environmental regulations but adopting practices that go beyond what is mandatory, promoting pollution prevention and efficient use of resources.

Given the growing social and regulatory pressure on industry to become more sustainable, this certification has become a benchmark for excellence and responsibility. In a market where consumers increasingly value a company's environmental ethics, holding the Clean Industry distinction provides official recognition that benefits an organisation's reputation and competitiveness.

Certification process

  1. Environmental audit: the process begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the company's processes, facilities and practices. An auditor authorised by PROFEPA verifies compliance with current legislation and identifies areas for improvement.
  2. Action plan: based on the audit, specific strategies and goals are defined to address the shortcomings detected. This can include installing emission control equipment, optimising waste management or implementing water and energy saving systems.
  3. Verification and follow-up: after the improvements are implemented, a second review confirms the changes. If everything is in order, the company obtains the Clean Industry certificate. PROFEPA follows up to ensure good practices continue.

Benefits for companies

  • Improved image: as an official recognition, the certification reinforces the company's credibility with customers, investors and neighbouring communities.
  • Cost reduction: many of the improvements suggested during the audit translate into savings in energy, water or raw materials, with a positive impact on profitability.
  • Avoiding penalties: by meeting and, in some cases, exceeding environmental regulations, the risk of sanctions from the authorities is minimised.
  • Innovation and competitiveness: introducing cleaner processes encourages research and the development of new technologies, helping the company stand out in the market.

Areas of focus

The Clean Industry Certification covers several areas, including:

  • Air quality: control and measurement of emissions to the atmosphere.
  • Waste management: proper separation, recycling and final disposal of waste.
  • Wastewater discharge: treatment before discharge to prevent pollution of water bodies.
  • Use of natural resources: saving water and energy, and using renewable energy where possible.

Future outlook

In a context of climate change and resource scarcity, environmental certification programmes are likely to become more important. PROFEPA has been incorporating stricter criteria and digitising processes to speed up audits.

Holding the Clean Industry label could become almost a prerequisite for participating in global supply chains, particularly in markets with high sustainability standards.

The Clean Industry Certification: a mark of corporate sustainability

The Clean Industry Certification demonstrates not only adherence to Mexican regulations but also a genuine commitment to continuous environmental improvement. This distinction reinforces a culture of corporate social responsibility and helps position Mexican companies as leaders in adopting sustainable practices.
