Reverse logistics platforms

Reverse logistics platforms are facilities designed to manage the flows of materials, products, or packaging that travel back from the consumer or distributor to the producer or an authorised waste manager. Their purpose is to maximise value recovery through reuse, repair, recycling, or energy recovery.

These platforms are the backbone of reverse logistics, the discipline that extends the useful life of materials and connects waste management with sustainable business strategy and the circular economy.

Regulatory and European context

The EU's circular economy strategy and the 2020 Circular Economy Action Plan stress the need to build product take-back mechanisms in sectors such as electronics, automotive, packaging, and textiles.

In Spain, the Waste and Contaminated Soils Law 7/2022 and Royal Decree 1055/2022 on packaging and packaging waste require companies to implement return systems and recovery platforms.

Key functions and operations

Reception and sorting

Returned materials are recorded, weighed, and sorted by condition. Items fit for reuse go to refurbishment; those that are not are sent for recycling or recovery.

Refurbishment and repair

Reverse platforms can include technical workshops to repair or refurbish electrical equipment, pallets, packaging, or industrial components.

Consolidation and transport

Once processed, products are reintroduced into the value chain or delivered to recycling plants, with logistics routes optimised to reduce emissions.

Digitalisation and traceability

The use of technologies such as digital tracking systems and IoT sensors enables full traceability. Each material or batch can carry a unique identifier that documents its origin, treatment, and destination, improving transparency and supporting compliance with extended producer responsibility (EPR) obligations.

Environmental and economic benefits

  • Reduced use of virgin raw materials.
  • Lower final-disposal costs.
  • Regulatory compliance and reputational gains.
  • Creation of specialised green jobs.

Example: the retail sector

Retailers use these platforms to manage the collection of packaging, furniture, or electrical appliances, which are then repaired, recycled, or donated to social organisations, reducing environmental impact.

Challenges

  • The need to synchronise manufacturers and waste managers.
  • Data standardisation for cross-sector traceability.
  • Initial logistics costs, with financial returns over the medium term.

Reverse logistics platforms help consolidate the shift from a linear to a circular economy, integrating waste management into corporate competitiveness, digitalisation, and decarbonization. Mining (extractive) waste includes overburden, tailings, slags and acid mine drainage. A guide to its types, environmental risks, the rules that govern it and its circular potential.

End-of-life tyres (ELTs)

End-of-life tyres (ELTs) are a high-volume, hard-to-degrade waste stream, but also a valuable source of secondary raw materials in the circular economy.

Used oils

Used oils, both industrial and cooking, are a hazardous waste stream but also a clear opportunity for circularity when they are managed and recovered correctly.
