Sustainability in transport is no longer optional: it is an environmental, regulatory and competitive necessity. Transport is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, so cutting its impact is decisive in slowing climate change. For companies, it also unlocks cost savings, improves reputation and makes regulatory compliance easier. In this article we explain why it matters and where to start.
The carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs), mainly CO2, emitted directly or indirectly by an activity, product or service.
The transport sector is one of the largest contributors to the global carbon footprint: according to the International Energy Agency, it accounts for around 24% of global energy-related CO2 emissions. In the European Union it is directly the largest emitting sector, according to the European Environment Agency.
Adopting sustainable practices is not just a moral or legal obligation: it offers concrete advantages for companies and society.
Measures such as fleet electrification or the use of biofuels reduce polluting emissions. This improves air quality and public health, especially in urban environments.
Although the transition requires an initial investment, in the long run it generates savings. Electric vehicles, for example, have lower running and maintenance costs than combustion ones, thanks to greater energy efficiency and fewer moving parts.
Transport companies that adopt responsible practices strengthen their image and stay ahead of regulation. Spain's Sustainable Mobility Act and the European CountEmissions EU regulation are pushing the sector to measure and reduce its emissions, so measuring the carbon footprint becomes a differentiating factor.
Reducing the carbon footprint requires a comprehensive approach, from technology to culture.
Educating people about the environmental impact of transport, encouraging public transport and active mobility, and promoting remote work where possible are low-cost, high-impact measures.
The transition to electric, hybrid or hydrogen vehicles is essential. Public incentives, the development of charging infrastructure and improvements in range are key to accelerating it. We go deeper into the emerging technologies for transport decarbonisation.
Measuring the carbon footprint is the first step to managing and reducing it. In transport, the reference standard is ISO 14083, the basis of the GLEC Framework, which is integrated into the broader framework of the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064.
At Manglai we offer a comprehensive solution to measure, manage and reduce the carbon footprint of transport, with automated calculation of Scopes 1, 2 and 3 and auditable reports.
