Mobile recycling points (mobile eco-points)

Mobile recycling points, also called mobile eco-points or mobile clean points, are transportable units that collect specific small-volume waste streams that should not go into ordinary containers: batteries, aerosols, used cooking oil, small electrical and electronic appliances, textiles or paints. They provide a practical, decentralised way to bring waste management closer to citizens, complementing fixed civic amenity sites (clean points).

Regulatory framework and purpose

Under Spain's Law 7/2022 on waste and contaminated soil and the EU Waste Framework Directive (Directive 2008/98/EC, as amended), municipalities must provide accessible drop-off points for household hazardous waste and promote selective collection. Mobile recycling points help meet this obligation and support extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes for products such as electronic waste.

How they work

  • They travel on a publicised schedule, stopping at set locations and times.
  • They have labelled compartments and, in many cases, scales and code readers.
  • They allow digital recording of the quantities and types of waste received.
  • Some units use solar power for greater autonomy.

Environmental and social benefits

  • They help prevent the uncontrolled dumping of toxic waste.
  • They improve access for rural areas and lower-density neighbourhoods.
  • They reinforce environmental education through direct contact with users.

Challenges

  • Logistics, maintenance and route coordination.
  • The need for trained technical staff.
  • Stable funding to renew the fleet.

By extending the reach of selective collection, mobile recycling points are an effective tool for meeting recycling targets and moving waste up the waste hierarchy. At Manglai we help organisations measure their environmental impact and report on waste and circularity. Discover how Manglai can help you.

Waste drop-off areas

Waste drop-off areas (áreas de aportación) are public points where residents deposit separated household waste, supporting separate collection, recycling and the circular economy.

Pyrolysis

Pyrolysis thermally decomposes waste in the absence of oxygen to recover oils, gases and solid carbon, offering an alternative to direct incineration or landfill within a circular-economy model.

Waste gasification

Waste gasification is a thermochemical process that converts non-recyclable carbon-based materials into a synthesis gas (syngas) that can be used as fuel or as a chemical feedstock.
