Carbon Footprint Label

A carbon footprint label is a seal or graphic declaration on a product or service that discloses the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated across its life cycle, typically expressed in kilograms of CO2 equivalent (kg CO2e). It helps consumers compare alternatives and encourages companies to reduce their emissions.

What it is for

  • Transparency: disclosing climate impact clearly and quantitatively.
  • Awareness: connecting consumption choices with their climate effect.
  • Differentiation: turning a credible sustainability effort into a market advantage.

Standards and methodologies

Verification

  • A complete GHG inventory for the chosen scope, built on a life cycle assessment.
  • Independent third-party verification by an accredited body.
  • Periodic updates to reflect improvements or supply-chain changes.

Challenges and criticism

  • Label proliferation: too many competing labels can confuse consumers.
  • Greenwashing risk: unverified labels or partial scopes can mislead. In the EU, the Empowering Consumers Directive (EU) 2024/825, which applies from 27 September 2026, restricts vague or unsubstantiated environmental claims.
  • Comparability: differences in methodology make labels hard to compare across markets.

Where it is heading

  • Digitalisation: QR codes linking to detailed reports, and the Digital Product Passport introduced under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781).
  • Harmonisation: EU work on standardised methods, including the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF).
  • Broader metrics: integration with water and circularity indicators for a fuller picture of impact.

Carbon footprint labels are a powerful tool for communication and behaviour change, provided they rest on robust methodologies and independent verification. At Manglai we help companies calculate their product carbon footprint and communicate it credibly. Discover how Manglai can help you.
