EDGE Certification

EDGE Certification (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) is an international rating system that promotes the design and construction of resource-efficient, low-impact buildings.

Developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, EDGE was created to make more efficient use of energy, water and materials easier to achieve, with a particular focus on emerging markets. It suits residential, commercial and tourism projects looking for sustainability without high additional cost.

How EDGE works

Unlike more complex certifications, EDGE is designed to be fast, affordable and easy to apply. It uses a free online software platform that lets teams simulate savings from the design stage.

To be certified, a project must show at least 20% savings in energy, in water, and in the energy embodied in materials, compared with a typical local building.

Assessment categories

  • Energy efficiency: efficient lighting, HVAC, insulation and renewable energy.
  • Water efficiency: low-flow fixtures, water reuse and rainwater harvesting.
  • Sustainable materials: lower-carbon materials and practices that reduce waste.

Certification levels

EDGE offers progressive levels: EDGE Certified (the 20% threshold across all three areas), EDGE Advanced (at least 40% on-site energy savings) and Zero Carbon for buildings that achieve very high energy performance and offset or avoid their remaining operational carbon.

Benefits of EDGE

  • Lower operating costs through reduced energy and water use.
  • Easier access to green or preferential financing from banks and development finance institutions.
  • A simple, quick certification process, well suited to residential developers.
  • Alignment with urban sustainability policies.

Certification process

  1. Register the project on the EDGE platform.
  2. Simulate savings and adjust the design where needed.
  3. Technical review by an accredited EDGE auditor.
  4. Certification issued by an authorised body such as GBCI, SGS or Bureau Veritas.

EDGE is an effective and accessible way to accelerate sustainable construction, especially in emerging markets. Its flexibility, practical approach and international recognition make it a strong option for projects seeking efficiency without unnecessary complexity. It also pairs well with people-focused schemes such as WELL and with LEED. At Manglai we help organisations connect efficient buildings with their carbon footprint and sustainability reporting.
